The Eliminating Health Disparity Initiative (EHDI) is a grant program within the Center for Health Equity. EHDI was established during the 2001 legislative session. The program invests about $5 million dollars annually in community initiatives that address health inequities for populations of color and American Indians across eight different priority health areas.

Project name: EHDI Family Spirit

Project Description: Family Spirit’s task is to be a culturally tailored intervention for health and leadership in the indigenous community. Life skills and health education to be delivered by community-based paraprofessionals. Core strategy is to support young parents from pregnancy to 3 years post-partum and beyond as needed. Ojibwe Cultural education and support for behaviorally-focused intervention, responsive to parents’ and children’s needs.
EDHI Grant Activity Outcomes: 1) Leverage the cultural assets and an indigenous understanding of health. 2) Encourage the use of paraprofessionals to deliver the program; and 3) Addresses behavioral health disparities, emerging globally as an urgent priority. The project anticipates that 50% of the program participants will improve pregnancy outcomes and 50% of fathers will develop a healthy lifestyle to support family wellbeing.

Geography and Population Served: Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe territory (reservation) serving non indigenous female/male married/co-habiting with Native American Indian that is also a caretaker of Native American Indian child from birth up to age 3 years.
